On International Women’s Day 2021: 35 Palestinian Women Prisoners Are Behind the “Israeli” Bars
International Women’s Day on 8 March is an opportunity for females to celebrate in all spheres across the globe. Nevertheless, Palestinian women prisoners, who are usually held in Hasharon and Damon prisons, have no right to feel anything but pain.
As the world celebrates International Women’s Day, Palestinian women continue to live under the longest occupation in modern history.
On Women’s International Day, Director of the Prisoners Center for Studies Dr. Raafat Hamdouna called on international Women’s and girls’ rights agencies and in situations to put pressure on the “Israeli” occupation to stop violating the rights of 35 Palestinian women in “Israeli” prisons, adding that the issue of Palestinian prisoners “will remain a bleeding wound that will only be healed with their freedom”.
Hamdouna also called on the international community to hold “Israel” accountable for its crimes and force it to respect international law and conventions
He also added that the 35 women prisoners continue are held in Hasharon and Damon prisons in violation of Article 76 of the Geneva Convention.
“They are subjected to all kinds of abuse and violence including deprivation of family visits, with no exception for mothers with young children, health services and education, as well as psychological and physical torture and sexual harassment”, he shouted out.
In the same context, the Palestine Center for Prisoner Studies accused international institutions of not paying attention to the suffering of Palestinian women who are exposed to all forms of abuse and persecution by the “Israeli” occupation, especially female prisoners.
Since the beginning of the occupation, over than 50 years ago in 1967, over 10,000 Palestinian women have been arrested and detained by “Israeli” occupation forces.
Testimonies by Palestinian women and girls highlight the brutality of the arrest process as well as conditions inside “Israeli” interrogation, detention and prison centers, and even hospitals while in custody. The abuse, ill-treatment, and torture of Palestinian women and girls take place within the context of the ongoing occupation of over 50 years and annexation of Palestinian lands.
